Thomas McCune married Mary Muldrew, Ballygorman on 05 May 1827 at Mountnorris Presbyterian Church. Thomas was, one of the twelve children of David McCune and wife unknown. (One of David’s daughters, Maria McCune, is my great-great grandmother who emigrated to Riviere-aux-Pins, 20 kms. north of Quebec City in 1828-1830 along with five other McCune siblings.) It is unclear whether Thomas and Mary continued to live in Ballygorman or moved elsewhere in Ireland, or possibly even emigrated to Canada or the USA.

Concerning the Muldrew clan who migrated from County Armagh, Ireland and settled in Wheeling, West Virginia. We have record of three young single men who migrated separately and who applied and became citizens (1) Thomas Muldrew, born 1814 Armaugh,

County Armagh, sailed May 1837; (2) John Muldrew, born 1817 County Armaugh, sailed May 1841; (3) James Muldrew, born 1819

County of Tilley, sailed May 1838. Finally we have an older man, Andrew Muldrew, who APPEARS to be their father, who migrated last. Andrew was born October 1790 County Armaugh, sailed March 17, 1848 (St. Patricks Day). Records in West Virginia indicate the older man brought with him a wife and two, possibly three sons. A granddaughter of the older couple wrote in a family Bible that Andrew Muldrew was a schoolmaster in Ireland and that his wife was Margaret MCKINLEY. She also wrote that they lived in Newry, Armaugh. Searches of Irish records have failed to prove the name McKinley or the relationship between these Muldrew persons. All three younger men who migrated, preceded the older man in death, therefore were not named in his will.

John Gordon (stonecutter) emigrated from Ireland to Boston in 1883, a year later he was followed by Eliza J Muldrew. A day after her arrival (18/9/1884) John and Eliza married in Chicopee Massachusetts. John was 21 and Eliza 19. Their first daughter, Mary Ann, was born a year later in Chicopee. I understand that the family returned to Armagh shortly after the birth of Mary Ann. I have the family at 32 Bristol Street Belfast in 1911. Their older children are born Armagh and the youngest in Antrim.I would like to be able to get back a little further back on both John and Elizas families. The Massachusetts marriage information gives Johns parents as Hugh and Catherine and Elizas as James and Margaret.

Castle Dillon

Castle Dillon House

The ninth Baronet’s son, William Arthur, 1877 – 1928, was the last Molyneux owner of Castle Dillon, although he predeceased his father by a few months and never held the title, which passed to a cousin Ernest who had no connection with Castle Dillon and died in 1940 without a male heir, leaving the title extinct.

The contents of the house were sold between the 2nd and 5th of October 1923 and the Scottish firm of McAnish & Co. Ltd. bought the entire estate to remove the timber in 1927. Armagh County Council purchased the house and the remaining 613 acres from McAnish & Co. for £9,800 in 1929, allowing them three years to remove 4000 trees excluding ornamental ones and themselves replacing the timber removed. While the reafforestation was going on, the Asylum Committee made good use of the arable land for the rehabilitation therapy via agriculture and horticulture of suitable patients from St. Luke’s.The lake was stocked with trout and opened to the public for a short time, just one year in the 1960s, if my memory is

correct. Briefly the house served as Northern Ireland’s first open prison for youths and then it was considered for conversion to an Agricultural College, but nothing came of this. In July 1985, the mansion was sold to the Sandown Group as a Private Nursing Home and the 600 acres of land were divided into two farms and bought by the Muldrew and Allen families.

Local Memories of Life in the 1940’s: War and Opportunity on the Border

“On Thursday afternoon, Mrs. Jos Brown, ‘Brookside’, Cloughrea, Bessbrook, had rather an exciting time and a very profi table one as far as the authorities are concerned, for her coolness and presence of mind enabled them to recapture 2 of the German prisoners who escaped from an internment camp . . . Mrs. Brown invited them inside and enquired if they would have some tea . . . “When they were comfortably seated at the meal, Mrs. Brown sent a boy, Gerald Niblock, who assists her husband on the farm, down to the licensed premises of Mr. William Muldrew, ‘Birkenhead’, Millvale, who telephoned the Bessbrook police. . . . During the meal and before the police had arrived the prisoner, whose master of our ‘lingo’ had evidently carried him so far, asked Mrs. Brown for a map showing the distance to Newry and Dundalk in “Free Ireland”. However the arrival of the MPs saved him the bother of studying any map.” Marie’s report for Pamela Sykes of NZ 21 June 1995

The spelling Muldragh/Muldrock is no longer used in Ulster. It has been replaced by Muldrew. This change came about after standardisation of spelling when civil registration of births started in 1864. The Householders Index for Co Down lists only one Muldrah family (the one you sent me) and one Muldrew family in the same Parish of Tullylish. However these did not seem near enough to Newry. The town and Parish of Newry is mostly in Co Down but partly in Co Armagh. The Union (administrative district) of Newry extends into Co Armagh and it was in this part I expected to find your family. The Householders Index for Co Armagh shows Muldragh/Muldrew in only 3 Parishes Ballymore, Loughgilly and Newtownhamilton. I had hoped that Hugh and Jane Muldrock were still having children 1864-8 as a birth ceritificate would have given a precise address. I checked only the Muldragh and Muldraw entries but neither had father Hugh. I then turned to marriages hoping that Hugh and Jane married after the start of registration in 1845 but this was not the case. I examined 5 entries in the Newry District and all but one were

from the Parish of Ballymore. Three were married in cremore Presbyterian Church and one of these was the son of Hugh Muldragh of Corlust. I felt that these were likely to be your relatives.

Griffiths Valuation shows Hugh and John Muldragh with farms in Corlust in 1863. Valuation Revisions show that Hugh disappeared (probably died) in 1887 and his land was taken over by John who died in 1892 and was succeeded by his son Hugh. Hugh appears as Muldrew in the 1901 Census. Note that a Clarke family also lived in Corlust.
